About Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the lens that lies behind the iris and pupil. As a result, many cataracts patients experience gradual loss of vision as the clouding worsens. In addition, patients with cataracts may experience glaring, blurred vision and/or sensitivity to light.

There are three types of cataracts:

Cortical cataract
Subcapsular cataract
Nuclear cataract

A cortical cataract forms in the lens cortex, while a subcapsular cataract forms in the back of the lens. Both cortical cataract and subcapsular cataracts are common in people with diabetes. The most common form of cataracts is a nuclear cataract, which forms in the center of the lens. Many people develop nuclear cataracts as a result of aging.

Treating Cataracts

In the beginning stages of cataract development, many patients are able to improve their vision with eye glasses. As the clouding worsens, however, most require cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery in the United States. During the procedure, Dr. Ashraf creates a small incision in the eye and carefully extracts the clouded lens. Then, he replaces the clouded lens with a sophisticated intraocular lens implant. Many intraocular lens implants (IOLs) are very successful at correcting presbyopia, nearsightedness and farsightedness.
