United States Army Reports Successful Laser Eye Surgery Results

At the 4th Annual International Military Refractive Surgery Conference, it was reported that >160,000 US Army service members have successfully undergone corneal refractive laser surgery. The United States Army Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program was designed to reduce the limitations of corrective eyewear in combat soldiers. Current options include eyeglasses of which pose risks in harsh environments, may become damaged, or get in the way of protective gear such as face masks. Contact lens wear on the other hand is not authorized in combat zones. For these reasons refractive surgery such as LASIK offers significant advantages. As reported in the July issue of Refractive Surgery by Parkhurst et. al, the results of this program have shown excellent outcomes and improved battle readiness of service members with minimal complications or negative impact on military operations.
